The sun had set and the sky had darkened to a light purple. The cars on the highway were fewer now and so were the turnoffs. Every so often a large billboard would sit on the side of the road advertising a restaurant or a hotel. Cassie slumped back in her seat with her feet resting on the dashboard. She had put aside the book she had been reading all day and was now watching the scenery as it streaked by. After several hours of listening to CD's Logan had talked her into listening to a rock station.

Logan yawned and flexed his hands on the steering wheel. He had been driving all day and was tired. The day had gone on without incident. They were both trying to get their bearings on one another. Cassie had not spoken much the whole day and Logan had found himself rambling on to fill the silence. He wasn't sure if it was helping much. A couple of times she had asked him a question or jibbed him. He smiled at that, the girl seemed to like arguing with him. They had only stopped a couple times for rest stops. They had also stopped for lunch and she had only picked at her food. Every so often he would glance at her as if he couldn't believe she was really there.

"We're going to have to stop for the night. I'm dog tired and if we don't do it now we might not hit a hotel for a while." He told her. Cassie glanced away from the window and shrugged. "You tired?" He asked her.

"Nope." She told him sitting up. Logan laughed but let the subject drop.

They reached the hotel a few minutes later. Cassie stepped out grateful and stretched her legs. "Stay here and I'll see about getting us rooms." Logan told her. Cassie nodded and lent against the car. Logan walked to the office giving her a backward glance before he entered. Cassie grabbed her bag and slung it over her shoulder. A few minutes later Logan came back and she followed him to a room. He unlocked it and walked in. Cassie frowned and followed him in.

"So is this your room or mine?" She asked confused.

"This is the only room they had. Looks like we're sharing it." Logan told her putting his bag down. Cassie looked around the small room that held only one bed. She shook her head.

"You have got to be joking." She laughed. "You can't be serious." She told him when he didn't say anything.

"Why not? You take the bed and I'll take the couch." He told her. Cassie laughed again running her hand through her hair.

"That's not the point." She paused trying to think of a way to put it. "Look, your a middle aged guy and I am a fourteen year old girl. We can not stay in the same hotel room together." She told him as if it were obvious.

Logan frowned deeply as realization formed. "Are you actually thinking that I would." He was at a loss for words.

"Blur the line of moral decency?" She offered. He gapped at her and she shrugged flopping on the couch. "You and I may have this long standing relationship, that very well may be paternal."

"It *is* paternal." Logan told her sternly. She waved a hand dismissing it.

"The point is that for all pretenses I just met you yesterday. How am I supposed to know?" She asked.

Logan thought about it for a moment then nodded. "You want me to sleep in the car?" He asked. Cassie stood up grabbing her bag.

"Nah, no point. You've been driving all day and it wouldn't be fair to have you sleep in the car." She walked over to the bathroom. "You can stay here but you have to promise that you'll behave yourself." She told him sternly.

Logan decided that he didn't know if she were joking or not. "I ought to take you over my knee." He grumbled. He heard Cassie laugh.

"Now that would be crossing the line." She told him with a hit of mischief. "Hey, I saw Lolita on cable." She told him closing the door. "You can have the bed." She told him. "I'm not tired, I just want to take a shower and watch some T.V. I get the couch." The water started running before he could aruge with her.

Logan sighed heavily and sat on the bed. He had slept only a few hours in the past few days. For some time he had been running on empty. The only thing that had kept him going was the fact that he had to find Jubilee. Now he had found her and he felt the wind running out of his sails. He rubbed his eyes wearily as he picked up the phone. He had to call Jean, he had promised he would. It had been hard enough talking her out of flying up here to see Jubilee. The X-MEN had found out that he had found her when Hank had confirmed her blood tests. They were ecstatic but anxious at how long it would take for her to return home. It was all probably for the best. The extended time would give him a chance to ease her back into her life with out giving it to her in one blow. He yawned agian as the phone rang.

Logan's eyes snapped opened and he was instantly awake. He sat up in bed taking in the fact that he must have fallen asleep. "Somethin's wrong." He muttered to himself as his eyes scanned the room. The T.V. was flickering light around the dark room. Buggs Bunny's voice filled the room quietly. He immediately realized what was wrong, her scent was faint. He lept out of bed. "Jubilee!" He yelled panic setting in. He threw back the door and stepped out. "Jubilee!" He yelled into the parking lot.

"What are you yelling about? I'm right here." Cassie yelled back. Logan's eyes focused in the dark. She was at the other end of the parking lot walking towards him. she fastened her pace and was soon inside. She was carrying a cup holder with four large cup and a bag. "And I told you to call me Cassie." She told him as she put her load on the table. Logan shut the door and glared at her suddenly angry. She rummaged through the bag oblivious.

"What the hell were you doing out there?" He growled. Cassie turned to look at him frowning slightly.

"I was hungry and I wanted some coffee." She said gestering to the table. She picked a cup up taking off the lid. "I saw there was a store down the road so I walked. It didn't take me that long." She told him.

"That's not the point. You should have told me." He told her, his voice rising.

"You were asleep when I got out of the shower." She said honestly not grasping why he was angry. She picked up another cup and tried to hand it to him. "Here have a capuchino."

"You don't get it." He told her sternly ignoring it. "Promise me your never going to do that again." He told her. She put the cup back on the table and didn't answer him. "Promise me!" He yelled. Cassie threw up her hands.

"All right I promise!" She yelled and stomped over to the bed. She sat on it and glared at him. "Jeez." She breathed crossing her arms. Logan looked at her for a long moment then sat on the bed next to her.

"I'm sorry." He said slowly. "I just." He paused. "I woke up and you were gone. I thought that something might have happened." He explained his voice calm.

She turned to him. "Look, nothing is going to happen to me." She told him annoyed.

"It did before. I just got you back, I'm not ready to loose you again." he said quietly. He put a hand on her shoulder. She waited a moment before standing up. Logan swallowed hard putting his hand on his knee. Cassie picked up her bag and sat down on the bed folding her legs underneath her. She glanced up at the TV and grinned.

"You want soemthing to eat?" She asked taking a sip of her coffee then put it on the nightstand. She took out the food she had bought.

"You walked over there for this?" He asked her amused. She nodded.

"And the coffee." She said bitting into a rice cake. She chewed on it thoughtfully. "You tired anymore?" She asked. Logan shook his head unwrapping a breakfast bar. "So what was my life like before?" She asked suddenly. Logan thought about it for a moment.

"It was hard. Your parents died in a car accident and you ran away. You hated the thought of being thrown into a home. You lived in a mall for a while and then you ran into me...you saved my life. I took you home, to the school." He told her. Cassie frowned.

"I thought I came home with you, then went to a boarding school." She said.

"No. You came home with me to a school. Xavier's School For The Gifted. You learned to use your powers there." He told her.

"Powers? What are you talking about?" Cassie asked confused. Logan looked up at her sharply searching her face.

"Your mutant powers." He told her. Cassie looked dumbfounded.

"I'm a mutant?" She asked loudly.

"Of course you are. Didn't you know?" He asked her. Cassie put her food down.

"No I did not know." She looked down at the bed. "What do I do? What are my powers?" She asked.

"You shoot plamsa energy from your hands." He told her. Cassie looked at her hand.

"How?" She asked shaking them. Logan laughed.

"I don't know you just do it. You mean you haven't done it before?" He asked. Cassie shook her head.

"Does that mean your a mutant too?" She asked. Logan nodded. "What do you do?" She asked.

"I heal really fast and my senses are hyperactive." He paused. "And I got these out of the deal." He told her. With a wet sound three long claws popped out of his hands. Cassie screamed and moved back on the bed. Misjudging how far to the edge she was she fell to the floor. Logna sheathed his claws and helped her up. He frowned slightly. "Sorry." He said sheepishly. Cassie shook her head wide eyed.

"No. It's all right. You just startled me." She told him breathlessly. They sat back on the bed. "Wow. I guess your not pulling my leg after all." She laughed and sat closer to him. "Do it again." She told him. With the same odd sound his claws popped though his hand. She jumped slightly but didn't make a sound. She sat on her knees and got right next to him. She put a light hand on his as she examined the sleek bone. "Is that your blood?" She asked. Logan nodded. Her warm hand was more sure and it held his. Her soft fingers poked the palm of his hand down his wrist. "Where do they go, when you put them back?" She asked.

His other hand had his claws sheathed. He pointed along his wrist. "They sit right here." He told her. Cassie frowned and stared up at him with her blue eyes full of concern.

"Doesn't that hurt, to have them popping up like that?" She asked.

"A little bit." He told her as he pulled the claws back into his arm. Cassie sat down on the bed still amazed.

"So home is actually a school for mutants." She said to herself then smiled widely. "This is pretty cool. How come I can't do my thing though?" She asked.

"Don't know. Maybe your body had too much strain on it. I'll ask Hank in the morning." He told her. "Are you sure your not tired?" He askedher. Cassie shook her head swiftly picking up her things. She walked over to the couch and sat down. "You should try to get some sleep anyway." Cassie lent back on the couch and glanced at the T.V. He haard her sigh and she turned back to him.

"That guy Terror was he a friend of yours?" She asked. Logan shook his head and he saw her relax ever so slightly. "But you know him." She said.

"I know a lot of people. Some of them aren't always so...nice." He explained.

Cassie laughed. "Your telling me. He said he kills people for a living. He acted as if it wasn't a big deal." She told him and waited a beat to see if he'd try to disprove her, he didn't. "He's a mutant. Does he do anythign other than...look different?" She asked. Logan looked uncomfortable.

"He can take over people's body parts when they die. He can use them as if they were his won. The parts have thier own momeories and he takes them over. Its useful in his line of work." Logan explained. Cassie put the rice cake down and grimaced. Silence hung in the room for a few minutes.

"Have you ever done that?" She asked her voice low but persistant.

"Take over someone's body parts?" He joked knowing full well what she was asking.

"No. Have you ever killed someone?" She asked staring intently at his face. Logan didn't look away.

"Yes. I have killed people." He told her feeling more than a little unconfortable about the conversation.

"How many?" She aske not even phased.

Logan's eyes grew dark. "I don't know, a lot." He gave a short laugh that was devoid of any humor. "I just don't know. I'm an old man and I have lived a long life. Even I don't know how old I am." He paused and Cassie watched as his eyes grew farther away. "Some where along the line soemthing happened and I lost a part of myself. I'm still me but I don't remember everything I should. Some of the memories I have aren't even real. There are great gapping wholes where somethin' should be. Too many things have happened." He stopped and Cassie stared at him in veiled concern. He blinked and looked over to Cassie like he just remembered she was there.

Her blue eyes met his and he felt understanding. "I don't remember anything about who I am. When I look in the mirror it surprises me each time, its like looking at someone else. I have no clue as to who I am. Everything is on impulses now. Its like I have to re learn everything before I can be an acutal person." Cassie shurgged her shoulders and fell back on the couch. "The whole thing sucks." She said suddenly. Logan smiled and nodded understanding.

"It will better trust me." He told her taking off his boots. Cassie looked up at the T.V.

"Good night." She told him without looking up.

Logan layed back in bed exhaustion coming over him again. "Stay put this time." He told her yawning. "And get some sleep we have an early morning tomorrow."

"'Kay." Cassie chirpped knowing full well she wouldn't.
